The owner of a North East company is to tackle a fire walk in aid of a charity that helps young people with special needs.
Alastair Smith, who runs Print & Mail Runner, which is based in Hexham, Northumberland and which carries out print work and direct marketing, will walk ten metres across hot coals on Thursday April 28 at Baltic Square in Gateshead to raise funds for the Tyneside-based Percy Hedley Foundation. He will be one of a number of walkers at the event organised by the Foundation, which recently opened its latest £4m development, including a hydro pool and a residential complex.
Alastair said: “I know the fundraising manager for the foundation and have seen the work that they do, which is fantastic, and I wanted to help them. “Fire walking was one of those things that I had seen on television and had always thought it was something I would like to try. It has been something on my bucket list for years so when this opportunity came along I took it. “I have had some training but, at the end of the day, it is all about being positive in the way you approach the walk. I feel a little trepidation but have faith in the training that I have received.”
Alastair is also heading up another fundraising initiative for the charity, based on his company’s ongoing campaign to love its customers through a series of special offers.
As part of his work with the business group Network North, he will be inviting visitors to the North East Expo at the Newcastle Falcons rugby ground on April 27 to Pucker Up for charity. Visitors will be invited to plant a smacker on a card to go on a Kissing Wall and the winning card will receive a prize. The event is part of Percy Hedley’s Challenge 500 initiative, where participants take £500 and increase the amount for the charity.
