For as long as anyone can remember, the humble business card has looked the same. Functional but not particularly inspiring.
However, that is changing, according to the owner of a company that specialises in direct marketing and printing. Alastair Smith, who runs Print & Mail Runner, which is based in Hexham, Northumberland, says that more clients are ordering marketing materials that are a little out of the ordinary.
He has noted increasing demand for business cards that have rounded edges, fold out or have spot varnish so that features like logos stand out.
Alastair believes that the creativity being shown by his clients is an example of the confidence that they feel despite the turbulence in the world.
He said: “Clients are looking for something a bit different, something that makes them stand out.
“We are moving away from the race to the bottom when it was all about keeping costs down and a pile them high, sell them cheap mentality.
“Now, a lot of my clients are spending a little bit extra on promoting themselves in unusual ways so that they can attract quality business. They are prepared to pay a little more to give them that edge.
“I think that such an approach is part of the confidence that businesses feel despite everything that is happening in the world.
“They have looked at the uncertainty about Brexit and at the political turbulence in the world and taken the view that there is still business to be done.
“A number of them are refreshing their brand with products that are a little different to allow them to take advantage of the opportunities.”
